Westerleigh Judokwai

Are There Any Entry Requirements To Join Westerleigh?

Westerleigh Judokwai was founded in 1995 by two brothers, Paul and Chris Everest. They had a handful of students, a small pile of gym mats and a bag full of enthusiasm. Since 1995 the club has grown to the extent of having over a hundred members ranging from 5 years old and over. Neither of them imagined that the club would be anything like it is now and along with a huge mat area costing over £4000 and with a load of help from volunteers the club will continue to grow.

What Do I Need To Bring With Me?

You only need to bring very little. A drink bottle and yourself is really the only things you need. When you start taking judo lessons your first session is free and after that it is just £2.00. We have a supply of judo suits (called Gi’s) that you can borrow or you can buy your own through our discounted shop. To hire a Gi it is £10.00.

Do I Need A Licence To Practice Judo?

Not right away. When you first start taking lessons, you are considered as being within a trial period. After 4 weeks you will have had enough time to decide whether or not to continue and at that point you will need to send away for your Judo Licence via the BJA

For 5 to 15 year olds it’s £26 for a new licence and £21 for a renewal. A Student/Junior Licence is for individals that are still in full time education and also cost £26 for a new licence and £21 for a renewal. A Senior licence for 16 years and upwards is £37 for a new one and £32 for renewal.

What Is So Special About Westerleigh Judokwai?

We Are A Judo Club With A Difference.

Firstly, we are linked with the Special Olympics organization and so our coaches are fully trained to work with both children and adults with special needs. However many of our judo students are regular main stream and they train right alongside those with special needs.

Westerleigh is a family run club and has never segregated the main stream and special needs students. In fact, we believe that we are the only club in Sussex that integrates main stream and special needs students in this way. At Westerleigh Judokwai we believe that our club is different, because here we’re all the same. Everyone trains together in a safe and friendly environment.
